History for Homeschoolers 2016-17

Piecing Together Vermont History

Offered one Wednesday and one Thursday a month. September 2016 through May 2017 • 1:00 to 3:00 pm
All sessions will take place at the Vermont History Museum in Montpelier.

Recommended for children ages 7 to 12. Some activities include reading and writing. Pre-registration is required.
Space is limited. Each session includes history-related activities that focus on the month’s theme.

September   Abenaki History & Oral Tradition – Learn about Abenaki history through stories which have been passed down through generations.

October       The Revolutionary War & Historical Fiction – Compare historical fiction to history to understand the impact of the Revolutionary War on Vermonters.
• Wednesday, October 12         • Thursday, October 13

November    Mid-1800s & Art – Examine paintings and works of art to learn about Vermont in the mid-1800s.
• Wednesday, November 9       • Thursday, November 10

December    The Civil War & Photography – Look at photographs of Vermonters to learn about the lives of soldiers and their families during the war. 
• Wednesday, December 14      • Thursday, December 15         

January       No classes this month       

February     Vermont Industries & Letters and Diaries – Study children's letters and diaries to compare the experience of young Vermonters in the past with your life today.​

March          Early 1900s & Sound and Film – Listen and look to understand how radio and movies told Vermont stories in the twentieth century.
• Wednesday, March 8              • Thursday, March 9               

April             Mid-1900s & Newspapers and Magazines – Use printed materials from the World War II era to learn about life on the Vermont home front.
• Wednesday, April 12              • Thursday, April 13              

May               Change Over Time & Archaeology – Use the skills and tools of archaeologists to understand how Vermont has changed over time.
• Wednesday, May 10                • Thursday, May 11

Sign up for some or all of the classes. Select either the Wednesday class or the Thursday class. 

$8.00 per child per session; $6.50 for VHS members and families with 3 or more participating children.
